A New Name for the Service You Love

After 20 years as DPHOTO, we are changing our name to Lightbox. We think this is a more modern and elegant name, and better encapsulates what we do. While the name is changing, everything else that you love about the service will stay exactly the same. This is purely a change in branding to better reflect who we are today.

Why Change?

I started DPHOTO way back in 2004 when digital photography was just starting to take over from film. At the time the name DPHOTO sounded modern and exciting. However, as the years passed, the ‘D’ in DPHOTO started to feel unnecessary, and then outdated. Not only that, but our platform grew to support all kinds of visual media, not just photos. I wanted a name that also encompassed all the videos, illustrations and artworks that were being uploaded.

Why Lightbox?

Sometimes, things just click. I loved the name Lightbox the moment I wrote it down. Simple and timeless. It captures the three foundations of our service—photography, storage, and sharing - while also being flexible enough to embrace everything else we do. And, amazingly, the domain was available.

What’s Next?

The new name and branding will roll out gradually over the coming months. You won’t have to do anything - all the content and links you’ve shared on DPHOTO will continue to work just as before. Your albums, files, galleries and workflow will remain exactly as they are.
