Dark Mode Has (Finally) Arrived

Yes, you read that right. Dark Mode is finally here. While you've been able to customize color themes for your shared galleries for 20 years now, the admin interface—where you spend the majority of your time—remained stubbornly in Light mode. This seems somewhat ridiculous considering how many photographers prefer working against a dark background.

Why did it take so long? Well, we've actually attempted to introduce a dark interface several times over the years. Each attempt, however, was abandoned due to various technical and design challenges.

The shared galleries feature a deliberately minimal design, making them relatively straightforward to theme. The admin interface, by contrast, is inherently more complex—with forms, settings, popups, buttons, menus, models, dialogues, notifications, and surfaces. Getting all these elements to work together in a visually pleasing and usable way turns out to be significantly more challenging than merely inverting foreground and background colors.

It took a while to get here, but we hope you enjoy it. To activate Dark Mode, simply head to Settings > General, and you’ll find a new Interface section. Choose Light, Dark, or System color theme. Selecting 'System' allows the interface to automatically adjust to match your operating system's theme. You can also configure a custom feature color to match your branding or just your personal preference.
